Section Three: Recommendations-New Curriculum Directions
3.5 What will be required to provide excellent programs
for college-bound students?
a) Issues
College students are a diverse population. They take courses
in a wide range of science-related occupational areas, as well as in a
great range of non-science-related occupational areas. While some college
students require a considerably broader knowledge of science than others,
all of them must achieve science literacy to function successfully in
an increasingly scientific and technological world.
b) Solutions and rationale
The STSE focus of the courses in our model in subsection
3.7 would be relevant to all students and enable them to develop the science
literacy they need to achieve success in their college programs. Students
requiring a deeper understanding of science should be able to choose electives
to satisfy their needs, including some electives developed specifically
for college-bound students.
