ARTICLE I: Elections of the Board of Directors

1.1 An elections committee, chaired by the immediate Past President, will be appointed by the Board of Directors annually to conduct the elections for the forthcoming year.

1.2 The election shall be held by mail during the spring term. Only members of STAO/APSO are eligible to be nominated. A brief biographical sketch of the nominee shall accompany the ballot form.

1.3 All STAO/APSO members have the right to nominate a qualified person to a position on the Board of Directors.

1.4 Each nomination for a position on the Executive Committee or for the position of Regional Councillor or Committee Chair must bear the signature of the nominator and seconder, all of whom must be members in good standing of STAO/APSO. The nomination form will also include the signature of the nominee and a statement of the nominee's willingness to fulfill the responsibilities of the office if elected.

1.5 Regional Councillors must be nominated by STAO/APSO members from that region.

1.6 In the event that only one individual is nominated for a position, the chair of the elections committee shall declare the individual elected.

1.7 The Board of Directors will assume office on September 1 following the elections.

1.8 If, during a term of office, a Regional Councillor or Representative changes position, thus no longer representing the region, institution, or organization for which he/she was elected or appointed, the Councillor or Representative must immediately submit a resignation to the Board of Directors.

1.9 In the event that a position on the Board of Directors is or becomes vacant after September 1, the elections committee will request the Executive Committee to appoint an individual to that position. That individual will continue in the position until the time of the next election for that position.

1.10 The Executive Committee is responsible for ensuring that Councillors remain aligned with the teaching of Science. When this is not so, the Executive, upon consideration, may request the resignation of the individual and appoint a replacement to serve until the next election for that position.

1.11 Within 30 days of the completion of the elections, all candidates will be notified of the results of the elections by the Elections Committee Chair.

1.12 All STAO/APSO members in good standing will be eligible to vote for positions on the Executive Committee and for Committee Chairs.

1.13 Only STAO/APSO members from a particular region will be eligible to vote for Regional Councillor of that region.

1.14 The Honourary President is selected from a short list of three (3) names presented by the outgoing Executive Committee to the Board of Directors at its winter meeting (February). Following a Board-set priority, the candidates are approached in order until acceptance is reached. If possible, the appointment is announced at the spring (May) meeting of the Board of Directors. Under no circumstances should candidates be told that their names would be submitted for "approval" at a Board meeting. Another list would be struck if the first list fails to produce a person who accepts.
